The city is named after Nathan Boynton, a Civil War major and Michigan politician who became one of the area's first settlers in 1895. Native Americans once inhabited this land, leaving behind an ancient burial mound with artifacts dating back to around 150 BCE.
The first non-indigenous settlers arrived in 1877 when Dexter Hubel and his family made Boynton Beach their home.
